Satoyama refers to different types of ecosystems, and Satoumi relates specifically to marine and coastal ecosystems. This publication outlines the objectives and findings of the ‘Japan Satoyama Satoumi Assessment’ which sought to “provide scientifically credible and policy-relevant information on the significance of ecosystem services provided by satoyama and satsuma and their contributions to economic and human development for the use of policy-makers” (page 9).
